Materials are at the heart of our society's greatest challenges, from the production and storage of clean energy for water purification, from the safe and sustainable management of transport to the protection of the environment. Simulations on computers reveal the behavior of matter at the atomic scale and are increasingly used to design better materials to meet these challenges.
This summer camp invites high-school students to spend 10 days at EPFL to discover scientific programming and material modeling! Classes, practical exercises and research projects will be on the agenda these days, as well as visits to laboratories and facilities on campus
Starting from the basics, they will learn about advanced techniques in simulation, including molecular dynamics, cellular automata and machine learning. Scientists will then guide them in the design and implementation of a simple project of their choice related to the modeling of materials. If they have ideas, they can already propose their own project when they register.
In addition to 6 junior researchers from the Ceriotti and Marzari groups, the EPFL high performance computing team SCITAS is enthusiastically involved in the organization, and is providing both facilities and instructors. Scientific content is overseen by Jean-Luc Desbiolles (SCITAS) and Michele Ceriotti (MARVEL).
