Prizes and awards

Michele Parrinello, MARVEL group leader and professor of computational sciences at the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, has been awarded the 2017 Dreyfus Prize in the Chemical Sciences. He is honored "for his groundbreaking developments of molecular dynamics simulation methodology and associated landmark studies of chemical, material, and biomolecular systems".

In mid-August 2017, MARVEL members Marco Gibertini (EPFL) and Vladimir Rybkin (University of Zurich) were both awarded an Ambizione grant by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

On 5 May 2017, Nicola Spaldin, MARVEL group leader and professor of Material Theory at ETH Zurich, has been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society for her outstanding contributions to science, in particular in the field of multiferroics.

Dr. Sandra Luber, MARVEL member in computational chemistry and materials science at the University of Zurich, has been granted the Clara Immerwahr Award 2017 for her outstanding research contributions to the field of catalysis.

Professor Nicola Spaldin, group leader in MARVEL, and professor of Material Theory at ETH Zurich, has been awarded the prestigious 2017 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards “for her groundbreaking multidisciplinary work predicting, describing and creating new materials that have switchable magnetic and ferroelectric properties.”

Sandip De, a MARVEL postdoc in the group of Michele Ceriotti at EPFL, won the best poster award in materials science at PASC 2016 conference held from June 8 to 10, 2016 at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Professor Ursula Röthlisberger, project leader in MARVEL, and head of the Laboratory of Computational Chemistry and Biochemistry at EPF, Lausanne, received the Doron Prize 2016.

Professor Ursula Röthlisberger, project leader in MARVEL, and head of the Laboratory of Computational Chemistry and Biochemistry at EPF, Lausanne, received the EuCheMS Lecture Award 2015.

Professor Matthias Troyer, group leader in MARVEL, and professor for Computational Physics at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at ETH Zurich, has won the 2016 Aneesur Rahman Prize for Computational Physics of the American Physical Society. 

Professor Dirk van der Marel, group leader in MARVEL, and professor at the Department of Quantum Matter Physics at the University of Geneva, has won the 2016 Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids Recipient of the American Physical Society. 

Professor Ursula Röthlisberger, project leader in MARVEL, and head of the Laboratory of Computational Chemistry and Biochemistry at EPF, Lausanne, was elected to the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Sciences together with five other new members. This election took place during the Academy annual meeting held in Beijing on June 7 and 8, 2015.

Professor Nicola Spaldin, group leader in MARVEL, and professor for Material Theory at ETH Zurich, has been awarded the Körber Prize, one of the most prestigious scientific awards in Europe.
