CECAM and MARVEL present the second installment of our Mary Ann Mansigh Conversation series and invite you to (re)discover the machine that transformed the specifications and the look and feel of calculators, opening the path to our modern laptops. With the help of two invited speakers, we shall explore the cultural environment that fostered the development of Programma 101 and learn more about the technical characteristics.

The 26th NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Alex Zunger, professor at the University of Colorado (Boulder, USA) on "Spontaneous symmetry breaking in nominal cubic oxide perovskites through structural, magnetic or dipolar degrees of freedom".

The MARVEL Junior Seminar series is continuing in videoconferencing mode. We are therefore pleased to propose the 44th MARVEL Junior Seminar: Tommaso Chiarotti (EPFL) and Tomáš Bzdušek (PSI/UZH) will present their research. The seminar will be chaired by Sara Fiore (ETHZ).

The eighth MARVEL Review and Retreat will take place on September 14, 2021. While we were initially optimistic that we might be able to hold at least some parts of the event in person, given the current uncertainties and the complexities with the Covid rules for in person events, no public event will be held this year. Instead, the Review and Retreat will consist in a  private online meeting between the MARVEL Scientific Advisory Board and PIs of Phase 3 projects. The event for the MARVEL community is postponed to spring 2022, as a final wrap up of MARVEL Phase 2. That event will be live if circumstances allow, and otherwise online, but it will be public, in order to give a broader audience the chance to see the work done in MARVEL.

The Volker Heine Young Investigator Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding computational work in the areas covered by the Psi-k mission statement ("...to develop fundamental theory, algorithms, and computer codes in order to understand, predict, and design materials properties and functions"). Applicants had to be either currently enrolled in a PhD program, or be recent PhD graduates who have received their PhD certificate no earlier than September 11, 2015. The ceremony will feature presentations by the five selected finalists.

Registration is open for the 17th edition of the Young Researchers’ Meeting (YRM) of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility, which will be held in Cagliari (Italy) from 6 to 10 September 2021! The main sponsors of this conference are Psi-k, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and MARVEL.

The 1-week camp entitled Des atomes aux ordinateurs, à la découverte de la programmation scientifique  is open to teenagers in the last two years of high-school, with no high-level in maths or physics prerequisite. A prior knowledge of the basics of programming is recommended. It is possible to acquire these notions independently if necessary (within 3-4 hours). Half of the seats are reserved for young women.

Swissnex in China in collaboration with the NCCR MARVEL have the pleasure to invite you to a Zoom webinar about Novel Materials Discovery, where professors from the Chinese Academy of Science, Fudan University, Beihang University and the NCCR MARVEL, including Clémence Corminboeuf and Nicola Marzari, will discuss the role of computational science in the discovery of new materials and the application in chemistry and medicine. 

This 1-hour seminar will offer PhD students and postdocs an overview on open science and open access in publications and data. It will include presentations by Nicola Spaldin, Nicola Marzari and Giovanni Pizzi on these key concepts.

The 25th NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Dr. Darío Gil, Senior Vice President and Director of IBM Research on "The Era of Accelerated Materials Discovery".
