Giovanni Pizzi is a senior researcher in the group of Nicola Marzari and worked for Platform Project 6 during MARVEL phase I. In phase II, he has led the Open Science Platform. Within MARVEL phase III, since May 2022, he is project leader of Pillar 3, Digital Infrastructure of Open Simulations and Data. He is also a member of the MARVEL data team.

Giovanni Pizzi got a "Laurea triennale" (Bachelor of Science) degree in Physics from University of Pisa and Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa (Italy) in 2006 (grade: 110/110 cum Laude) and a "Laurea Specialistica" (Master degree) in Physics (in 2008) from University of Pisa (110/110 cum Laude) and Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa (70/70 cum Laude).

He then obtained the PhD title in February 2012 from Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa (grade: 70/70 cum Laude) with a Thesis titled "Band-structure engineering of Ge-rich SiGe nanostructures for photonics applications", under the supervision of Prof. Giuseppe Grosso.

In 2012 he has moved as a post-doc research scientist in the THEOS group of EPFL (Switzerland). Some of his current research interests include: ferroelectric properties of functional oxides; high-throughput computations and creation of material properties databases from ab initio simulations — he is one of the authors and developers of the AiiDA code; Wannier functions — he is one of the co-authors of the Wannier90 2.0 code — with a particular focus on transport properties.
