The story of Jacutingaite at EPFL Scientastic 2024

During the 2024 edition of Scientastic, the EPFL Science Festival, being held on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November, you will discover how science works! In particular, meet Lidia Favre-Quattropani, MARVEL scientific manager, telling the the story of Jacutingaite, or how a wonder material went from the mine to theory, crystal growth and experiments.

MARVEL will once more participate to Scientastic at EPFL in 2024. This year, meet us in a 20-min conference in French for the public at large about the MARVEL success story of Jacutingaite, on Sunday at 13:30, in auditorium CO 2.

Il était une fois un cristal de jacutingaite

L’histoire commence en 2008, lorsqu’une étrange petite inclusion est remarquée dans des minéraux prélevés dans une mine brésilienne. Tout aurait pu s’arrêter là si les caractéristiques de cette inclusion n’avaient pas été partagées dans une base de données de cristaux. C’est ainsi que la jacutingaite s’est invitée dans la recherche de nouveaux matériaux, entre théorie, simulations, croissance cristalline et expérience, dans un ping-pong plein de surprises.
