  • MARVEL Junior Retreat 2024

    The sixth MARVEL Junior Retreat will take place from dinnertime September 10 until lunch on September 13, 2024. It will give PhD students and Postdocs involved in MARVEL groups the opportunity to interact, share their experiences, learn about each other’s research, start new collaborations and discuss various aspects that are relevant for young researchers. The focuses of this year’s MARVEL Junior Retreat are “entrepreneurship, technology transfer, intellectual property rights”.

    Emmanouil Kioupakis is a professor of Materials Science and Engineering and of Applied Physics at the University of Michigan, and is currently a visiting professor at EPFL, hosted by MARVEL, until June 2025.

  • MARVEL Industry Day @Empa

    The MARVEL Industry Day will take place on September 5, 2024 at the Empa-Akademie in Dübendorf. The day-long workshop will bring together members of industry, academia, and public research institutions to discuss areas in which computer simulations can provide important insights to industry.  The workshop will include invited seminars from academic and industrial partners. The keynote presentation for the event will be given by Prof. Roberto Car from Princeton University. Speakers from companies such as IBM, BASF, Bosch, Microsoft, Schott and Beyond Gravity will present their outlook on how computer simulations can provide critical real-world insights to industry.

    The 38th NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Prof. David Srolovitz, The University of Hong Kong. He will be presenting a lecture entitled: "Grain boundaries are natural Brownian ratchets: directional GB anisotropy".

  • 2024 Summer camp for high-school students

    The 1-week camp entitled Des atomes aux ordinateurs, à la découverte de la programmation scientifique is open to teenagers in the last two years of high-school, with no high-level in maths or physics prerequisite. A prior knowledge of the basics of programming is recommended. It is possible to acquire these notions independently if necessary (within 3-4 hours). Half of the seats are reserved for young women. In 2024, it will take place from 24 to 28 June at EPFL. There are still a few places left for girls (online registration as soon as possible).

    The MARVEL Junior Seminars aim to intensify interactions between the MARVEL Junior scientists belonging to different research groups – this is held in hybrid mode, in order to maintain in-person contacts and allow off-campus attendees to follow the seminars remotely! We are pleased to propose the 60th MARVEL Junior Seminar: Edan Bainglass and Marnick Bercx (Materials Software and Data Group, PSI) will present their research. The seminar will be chaired by Sanggyu Chong (Laboratory of computational science and modelling, EPFL).
