A new edition of the "Advanced Quantum ESPRESSO school: Hubbard and Koopmans functionals from linear response" will take place (fully in presence) in Pavia - Italy, from August 28th to September 1st. This is the second school on the topic after a very successful and exciting first edition held (virtually) in 2022 and it benefits from the support of the NCCR MARVEL.

The MARVEL Junior Seminar series is continuing in hybrid mode, in order to maintain in-person contacts and allow off-campus attendees to follow the seminars remotely! The MARVEL Junior Seminars aim to intensify interactions between the MARVEL Junior scientists belonging to different research groups.  We are pleased to propose the 52nd MARVEL Junior Seminar: Giovanni Piccioli (Statistical Physics and Computational Lab, EPFL) and Anooja Jayaraj (nanotech@surfaces lab, Empa) will present their research. The seminar will be chaired by Alessandro Carbone (THEOS, EPFL).

The 1-week camp entitled Des atomes aux ordinateurs, à la découverte de la programmation scientifique  is open to teenagers in the last two years of high-school, with no high-level in maths or physics prerequisite. A prior knowledge of the basics of programming is recommended. It is possible to acquire these notions independently if necessary (within 3-4 hours). Half of the seats are reserved for young women.

The 35th NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Prof. Emmanouil Kioupakis, University of Michigan. He will be presenting a lecture entitled: "Advancing the state of the art in semiconductor technology through predictive atomistic calculations: from uncovering fundamental limitations to discovering new materials." 

This seminar, hosted jointly by MARVEL and EPFL's Centre for Quantum Science and Engineering (QSE), will feature Andrew Briggs, Professor of Nanomaterials at the University of Oxford. He will be giving a presentation entitled: "Accelerating quantum technologies with machine learning".

This MARVEL seminar will be given by Zhiting Tian, Associate Professor at Cornell University. She will be giving a presentation entitled: "Thermal Phonon Transport for Energy Applications".

As part as the Open Research Data — NCCR Network Ventures, we have the pleasure to invite you to a series of three joint NCCR meetings on open science and open research data, to be held in Zurich, Lausanne, and Basel, featuring presentations and practical workshops by experts and researchers who have developed methods for practicing various aspects of Open Research Data.

This joint MARVEL - Physical Chemistry seminar will be given by Prof. Vojtech Vlcek, University of California Santa Barbara. He will be giving a presentation entitled: "Excitations Dynamics Driving Electronic Correlations in Molecules and Solids" 

The Julia programming language has emerged in the past years as an alternative to the traditional python / Fortran / C++ mix in scientific computing. In this seminar, Prof. Michael Herbst (EPFL) will be giving an overview of Julia codes, with perspectives for using it in the field of atomistic materials modeling.

The 34th NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Prof. Claudia Felser, Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (Dresden, Germany). She will be presenting a lecture entitled: "Chirality and Topology".

In April 2023, EPFL will once again open its doors to a large public of all ages. This is an opportunity for thousands of visitors to discover the secrets of the school through events, animations, meetings, workshops and many other surprises. MARVEL will be part of the adventure.
