David Vanderbilt (Rutgers University) and Raffaele Resta (IOM-CNR Democritos, Trieste) will give a joint lecture on "Berry phases in condensed matter physics", in what will be the third event in the series "Classics in molecular and materials modelling" hosted by CECAM and MARVEL.

The MARVEL Junior Seminar series is continuing in videoconferencing mode. We are therefore pleased to propose the 40th MARVEL Junior Seminar: Sauradeep Majumdar (LSMO, EPFL) and Abhinav Jain (LAMMM, EPFL) will present their research. The seminar will be chaired by Sara Fiore (ETHZ).

On March 8, EPFL and ETHZ propose online events on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2021. An opportunity to follow interesting debates about gender equity and discover inspiring careers.

The 22nd NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Prof. Jens K. Nørskov, Professor of physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), on "Catalysis for sustainable production of fuels and chemicals".

The MARVEL Junior Seminar series is continuing in videoconferencing mode. We are therefore pleased to propose the 39th MARVEL Junior Seminar: Jigyasa Nigam (COSMO, EPFL) and Samuel Poncé (THEOS, EPFL) will present their research. The seminar will be chaired by Kristians Cernevics (C3MP, EPFL). 

Between January 19 and 21, 2021, Better Science and the Office for Gender Equality at the University of Bern host a screening of “Picture a Scientist.” MARVEL encourages you to discover this inspiring film.

The 21st NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Prof. Silvia Picozzi, Director of Research at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) at the Institute for Superconducting and Innovative materials and Devices (SPIN) in Chieti, Italy. Her lecture is entitled "Spin-orbit coupling: a small interaction leading to rich physics".

The European Researchers' Night, funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA), is a Europe-wide public event that brings researchers closer to the public. The Night provides researchers the opportunity to showcase the diversity of science and its impact on citizens’ daily lives, and to stimulate interest in research careers – especially among young people. The events highlight how researchers contribute to our society by displaying their work in an interactive and engaging forum.

We are therefore pleased to propose the 38th MARVEL Junior Seminar: Tobias Esswein (ETHZ) and Haiyuan Wang (EPFL) will present their research. The seminar will be chaired by Stefano Falletta.

The 20th NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture is given by Prof. Stefano Baroni, Professor of theoretical condensed-matter physics at the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy, on "Gauge invariance of heat and charge transport coefficients".
