Newsletter - March 2018

We are pleased to send you the third issue of the newsletter put together by the NCCR MARVEL, the Swiss Center on Computational Design and Discovery of Novel Materials, created in May 2014 by the Swiss National Science Foundation. With EPFL as the leading house, MARVEL is directed by Prof. Nicola Marzari and currently involves 41 principal investigators across 12 Swiss academic institutions. 

 COMDI 2018 is the international workshop on Computational Design and Discovery of Novel Materials organized by MARVEL on 10-11-12 September 2018 at the SwissTech Conference Center in Lausanne. The deadline for abstract submission is 30 April 2018. Registration is open until 15 June 2018.

Recent Highlight

A machine learning algorithm can predict inexpensively the complex structure of silicon structures, and identify active (left) and inactive (right) drugs for a given target protein, using a small number of reference calculations or experiments. Credits: Michele Ceriotti, EPFL and co-authors.

2D or not 2D? MARVEL algorithm answers the question

Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, are a new and exciting class of materials. No more than a few atomic layers thick, they have the most extraordinary properties, making them attractive for all kinds of applications. However, despite high expectations, progress in identifying new 2D materials has been slow: to date, only a few dozen have been identified experimentally. In their just-out Nature Nanotechnology paper, which made the cover page, "Two-dimensional materials from high-throughput computational exfoliation of experimentally know compounds", a team led by MARVEL director Nicola Marzari takes a computational route towards improving that count.

Igor Reshetnyak (EPFL, CSEA) gives a presentation on 'First principles description of Cu2V2O7: electron-hole interaction and thermal effects' and Kun-Han Lin (EPFL, LCMD) on 'High-Throughput Screening of Novel 2D Support Materials for Catalysis'. The seminar is facilitated by Francesco Ambrosio.

Alexey Soluyanov awarded SNSF professorship

Congratulations to Alexey Soluyanov, MARVEL researcher at ETH Zurich! He was awarded a SNSF professor position at the University of Zurich, with his project entitled "Topological Phases: From New Fermions to Materials and Devices".

AiiDA news: The latest version of AiiDA 0.11.3 was released on March 28, 2018.

International Workshop on Computational Design and Discovery of Novel Materials

The International Workshop on Computational Design and Discovery of Novel Materials, open to the international community active in the field of MARVEL, will take place on September 10-12, 2018 at the SwissTech Convention Center, Lausanne. Registration is extended until 20 June 2018.

The ACCES visualization contest rewarded digital projects presented in images

Representing digital data visually was the challenge of the 2017 ACCES visualization contest, whose award ceremony took place on February 26, 2018. The projects of this second edition, on the theme of computational thinking, were exhibited at EPFL until 21 March and are still visible on the ACCES website.

PRACE-MaX Tutorial on high-throughput computations: general methods and applications using AiiDA @CINECA

This tutorial is organized for 40 students, postdocs and researchers interested in applying high-throughput computations in their research and interested in learning how to use the AiiDA platform. Registration is open until April 16, 2018.

2018 Workshop on Fortran Modernization for Scientific Applications (ForMoSA18)

The three days workshop is aimed at programmers, active in the development of a scientific application written in Fortran, who want to write modern code or modernize existing codes. It consists of lectures, invited speakers presentations, and practical hands-on sessions. The workshop is free of charge, registration is required before the end of April 2018.

2018 High-school students summer camp

The 2-week camp entitled "From atoms to computers — Discovering scientific programming"  is open to teenagers aged 16 to 19 years old, corresponding to the last two years of high-school, with no high-level in maths or physics prerequisite and no prior programming knowledge required. Half of the seats are reserved for young women.

CECAM/Psi-k School - Path Integral Quantum Mechanics: From the Basics to the Latest Developments

Jun 25, 2018, 9:00 until Jun 29, 2018, 17:00, CECAM HQ in Lausanne, Switzerland

As with all CECAM events, there are no conference fees, but it is essential that students apply soon, as only a limited number of seats can be offered. Due to generous funding from CECAM, Psi-k, and MARVEL, organizers will be able to provide partial funding to cover travel or accommodation to some participants. Review of applications for funding will begin on March 2nd, 2018 and will continue until all funding has been allocated.
