Newsletter - September 2018

Dear MARVEL'ers,

Let me start this newsletter by welcoming Patrick Mayor as our new Program Manager for MARVEL. Patrick joins us after having had many years of experience as a coordinator in the Nano-Tera.ch program, so he is very much acquainted with the Swiss research landscape, and with what it takes to make a large effort like ours run smoothly. Patrick is already well integrated into the management team, and the transition with Nathalie has been very smooth - again we wish all the very best to her in taking up in full her own professional endeavour.

Our research conference COMDI 2018 just finished, and was a great success - the scientific quality, international line-up, and turnout were all impressive. Thanks again to all of you involved in organizing or contributing to it.

Last, from September, Materials Cloud is open to everyone outside MARVEL to upload quality, curated data. It's an official partner of Nature Scientific Data, and it fulfills all the criteria that the SNSF or the EU require for data management plans: we are actually considered a model, way ahead of the curve.

INSPIRE Potentials – MARVEL Master's Fellowships

The INSPIRE Potentials – MARVEL Master's Fellowships are developed to empower excellent female students to pursue a career in a field of science where women are still strongly underrepresente. They consist of a 6-month 12'000 CHF fellowship (+ 500 CHF for travel + separate coverage of tuition fees and medical insurance (for non EU participants)). The yearly application deadlines are on 15 April and 15 October.

Benjamin Meyer (EPFL, LCMD) gives a presentation on 'Revealing the interplay between covalent and non-covalent interactions in organic molecular crystals under pressure with DORI' and Binglun Yin (EPFL, LAMMM) on 'First-principles-based prediction of yield strength in the RhIrNiPdPtCu high entropy alloy'. The seminar is chaired by Davide Campi.

CCMX – NCCR MARVEL Materials Science Day 2018

Make sure to network with colleagues from the materials science scene in Switzerland! The NCCR MARVEL and CCMX are co-organizing their second Materials Science day, featuring both experimental and modelling approaches to current challenges in materials science.

High school students tackle materials simulation

MARVEL and EPFL have organized the first edition of a two-week summer camp for high school students destined to graduate next year, in which 13 of them could learn the basics of programming to study materials.

The inventor 2.0: the evolution from the stone age to new materials

On Thursday, 20 September, Nicola Marzari, director of NCCR MARVEL, spoke on Il Giardino Di Albert, a show on Swiss radio station Rete Due. Dealing with both major issues that directly affect our daily lives (pollution, allergies, food) and laboratory research (medicines, new discoveries, inventions), it encourages popular debate on some fundamental themes of society.

When pressure lets you tune your charge density

In a study published in Angewandte Chemie, MARVEL members report on the increased stability of tin nitride under compression.
