  • The gender gap in computing: Shobhana Narasimhan featured in Nature for the Ada Lovelace Day

On the Ada Lovelace Day, which every year celebrates and raises awareness of the contributions of women to STEM fields, Nature asked six women in computer science and technology reflect on their experiences in the field. One of them is Shobhana Narasimhan, a professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bengaluru, India and a member of the SNSF's MARVEL Review Panel.

  • Michele Simoncelli wins the SPS Award in Computational Physics

The award recognizes the contributions “to a modern theory of thermal transport in solids” from his PhD research supervised by Nicola Marzari.

  • The 2023 MARVEL junior retreat: bridges between academia and industry

The junior members of the consortium gathered in Davos from 11 to 15 September, to present their work and discuss how to improve the interaction between  the research world and the industrial one.

  • Ana Akrap receives the Ludwig-Genzel-Prize 2023

The University of Fribourg professor was awarded the prestigious recognition for her contributions to the physics of quantum materials obtained via infrared spectroscopy.

  • Five new INSPIRE Potentials fellows will join MARVEL for their Master's research projects

We are happy to announce that Jente Clarysse (ETHZ), Anna Paulish (EPFL), Ayesha Ulde (IITM, India), Laura Mismetti (EPFL) and Aude Maier (EPFL) were granted INSPIRE Potentials – MARVEL Master's Fellowships after the April 2023 call. The five women are joining MARVEL labs for a 6-month Master's research project — congratulations!

  • Zoë Holmes adds expertise in quantum machine learning and an open-minded approach to the field to MARVEL’s phase 3

A recently-appointed Tenure Track Assistant Professor at EPFL, where she leads the Laboratory of Quantum Information and Computation, Zoë Holmes joined NCCR MARVEL in the spring of 2023 and now contributes to the Pillar on Quantum Simulations led by Giuseppe Carleo.

  • Through the glass: predicting the thermal conductivity of glassy insulators from first principles

A  SNSF-funded study by MARVEL authors opens new doors for optimizing and comprehending the behavior of glassy thermal insulators

  • MARVEL scientists join the 2023 edition of ASESMA in Kigali

The African School on Electronics Structure Methods and Applications is taking place in the Rwandan capital from 12 to 23 June, and features several speakers from MARVEL.

  • Flexibility Grants: The SNSF support for researchers with families

"Pursue your career while raising a family." This is what the SNSF proposes with the Flexibility Grants.

  • When electrons dress up in light

Professor Michael Schüler of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) joined NCCR MARVEL in Phase III, and is now a Group Leader in the “Advanced Simulation Methods” project. To highlight the expertise he brings to NCCR MARVEL, we repost a recent story from the PSI website, about a study he co-authored in Nature. In this study, ultra-short and strong light fields were used to directly observe how exotic energetic states, so-called Floquet bands, form in a crystal.

  • New portraits added to the “Women in Materials” artwork at EPFL

The installation, on display since 2018 in the entry hall of the Institute of Materials (IMX), has been expanded and updated with the addition of two more faculty members, and now showcases twelve EPFL professors active in the field of materials science.

  • Equal opportunity activities for young girls and boys in fall 2023

MARVEL and EPFL's Science Outreach Department are pleased to announce equal opportunity initiatives targeting girls and boys. Registrations for the 2023-2024 edition of the mathematics workshops Maths en jeu (girls and boys 8 to 15 years old) are opening on 1st May 2023. Those for the science workshop Diamants, alu, caoutchouc, ils sont fous ces matériaux (girls 7-10 years old) are opening on 15 May 2023. Both will fill up quickly. The Coding club des filles is proposing workshops with registrations all along the year.
